Marx – a project? – in our day? Visual art? At first glance an absurd undertaking. After the demise of "Real Socialism,” one would think we had finally gotten past this subject. "The last five years have clearly shown that a political and economic system like ‘Capitalism’ offers a better way of life for humanity.” And what importance could a nineteenth-century thinker have in our high-tech twenty-first-century information society? And even if he is still significant in some way, what can art accomplish in the realm of philosophy, whose essential medium is language?
In my reading and study of the thinking of Karl Marx I was astonished by its striking currency and a number of strong affinities. In the fact of considerable criticism and despite reservations from the perspective of art, I felt compelled to approach the humanism of this "practical philosophy” with the resources of art. Marx excerpted and wrote throughout his lifetime. There is no complete critical edition of his work in print today. Thus the sheer abundance of material suggests the likelihood of failure. It would be impossible and senseless to attempt a comprehensive reassessment à la "Marx today” within the context of the visual arts. Yet it is entirely possible and useful to take an open-minded look at several questions that appear especially relevant today. I conceived this as a two-part project: an exhibition at the house where Marx was born and sixteen interventions in public space in his native city of Trier. The exhibition was realized, while the interventions in urban space were blocked by the Diocese of Trier.
My activities were focused on Marx’s life and work and not on the impact of his political and economic writings, particularly in the twentieth-century. In my opinion, the pasted-together theories and justifications employed in attempts to apply "Marxism” (a term rejected by Marx himself) missed the crucial point entirely: the free, self-determined individual. I think the following themes are still relevant today:
Critical consciousness
Individual freedom
The democratic society
International solidarity
The effects of alienation
The fetish character of goods and money
Labor and (added) value
Religion and the human being
Dialectical thinking
Practical philosophy
Perpetual revolution
Utopia and reality
A new American biography of Marx published in 2001 and critical appraisal of Marx in the world of Wall Street suggest the possibility of a reassessment.

Marx – ein Projekt? heute? Bildende Kunst? Auf den ersten Blick ein absurdes Unternehmen. Durch die Auflösung des „Realen Sozialismus“ scheint dieses Thema endgültig überwunden zu sein. „Die letzten fünf Jahre haben doch klar gezeigt, daß ein politisches und wirtschaftliches System wie der „Kapitalismus“ für die Menschheit doch die bessere Lebensform ist.“ Und welche Bedeutung hat schon ein Denker des 19. Jahrhunderts in unserer hochtechnifizierten Informationsgesellschaft im 21. Jahrhundert. Selbst wenn noch von Bedeutung, was ist mit der Kunst im Bereich der Philosophie, deren ureigene Form die Sprache ist, zu erreichen?
Bei der Lektüre und Auseinandersetzung mit dem Denken von Karl Marx erstaunten mich die enorme Aktualität und große Affinitäten. Trotz heftiger Kritik und Bedenken aus dem Kunstkontext sah ich mich genötigt, mich mit künstlerischen Mitteln dem Humanismus der „Philosophie der Praxis“ anzunähern. Marx hat zeitlebens exzerpiert und geschrieben, es existiert bis heute keine vollständige kritische Gesamtausgabe seines Werkes, eine Fülle an Material also, die das Scheitern inkludiert. Es ist unmöglich und unsinnig, eine umfassende Neubewertung à la „Marx heute“ innerhalb der Bildenden Kunst durchzuführen. Möglich und sinnvoll erscheint aber, mit unverbrauchtem Blick auf einige gerade heute wichtige Fragen zu verweisen. Ich habe dieses Projekt zweiteilig angelegt. Eine Ausstellung im Geburtshaus von Karl Marx und sechzehn Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum seiner Geburtsstadt Trier. Die Ausstellung konnte realisiert und die Interventionen im Stadtraum vom Bistum Trier verhindert werden.
Meine Beschäftigung konzentrierte sich auf Biographie und Werk von Marx und nicht auf die politischen und nationalökonomischen Auswirkungen vor allem in 20. Jahrhundert. Die zusammengebastelten Theorien und Legitimationen bei der politischen Umsetzung des „Marxismus“ (ein Begriff, den Marx abgelehnt hat) haben für mich das Zentrale außer acht gelassen: das freie und selbstbestimmte Individuum. Für aktuelle Themenbereiche halte ich:

Der Fetischcharakter von Ware und Geld.

Eine im Jahr 2001 neu erschienene amerikanische Biografie und die Marxrezeption im Umfeld der Wall Street scheinen auf eine Neubewertung schließen zu lassen.
